These are PM Orbán’s dreams: Olympics in Budapest and the Hungarian team in the football world cup final

The Hungarian prime minister gave a long end-of-the-year interview to Nemzeti Sport, a pro-government Hungarian sports daily. He said that his government realised that they have to support sports because without hard work, heroes, sacrifices, and ideas, life would become ‘swampy’. He added that he would like Hungary to organise the Olympic Games and the Hungarian national team to be one of the finalists in the football world cup.

According to hirklikk.hu, the prime minister said he has not yet received the coronavirus vaccine since he is waiting for his turn. “First, we have to protect the healthcare workers in the intensive care units of hospitals,” he highlighted. He added that perhaps returning to the life we got used to before the epidemic is

not as far as we think.

He stated that we have the vaccine which can provide us with the safety we lost last March, and it is only a matter of weeks until we can have enough for everybody. However, until then, even sports events cannot risk people’s health. He highlighted that sport is significant for the Hungarian people. That is why the government includes it in education.

He said that football was the most popular and most widespread sport in Hungary. That is why its role is stressed. He has always regarded football as part of our national self-esteem. He said that the leftists oppose everything, including sports. He added that leftist politicians would not spend money on sports, but Hungarian sports is

far from being overfunded.

He stated that there are constant attacks on everything that belongs to normal life, including even sports. “Sometimes I feel that we have to live in a global reeducation camp,” he concluded. He said that he was

very proud of the daily physical education in schools and the sports equipment (balls, football goals, etc.) they sent to kindergartens.

He also said that

the Hungarian corporate tax system supporting sports clubs was a success story

because it created a living connection between the companies and the sports clubs they support.

In the case of state-accredited academies, he called the government’s quality assurance necessary. Today, that assurance includes football, handball, and basketball. However, in the future, they will extend it to ice hockey and volleyball. He said that most clubs are still struggling with financial problems, and for most of them, even reaching the European intermediate level is a challenge.

He said that today, many club chairmen are politicians, but that is not necessary for the future. Talking about plans, he said that

he would like to build an ice sports centre, they would like to renew the Hungaroring, and they will create a Moto-GP track.

He also wants Hungary to organise the Summer Olympic Games. PM Orbán added that, provided the project was not killed in 2017, they could have done that in 2032 the latest. Furthermore, he would like to see the Hungarian team in the football world cup final.

Talking about his training, he said that 2020 was hard, but he plans to continue to play football tennis from January. “In the academy, the trainers play weekly. At Easter, I would like to join them,” PM Viktor Orbán concluded.

  1. The Olympic games are a hugely expensive undertaking and in modern times none bar one broke even, let alone making a profit. In 2019 Hungary’s GDP was just over $160 billion. In 2012 the London Olympics (which were an ‘economy’ version) in the end cost around $30 billion. Hungary cannot afford the Olympics – don’t forget that they bankrupted Greece and Barcelona games are STILL being paid for.

  2. Concur – Anonymous.
Japan – Tokyo, the cancelled 2020 Summer Olympic – BIG debt to carry, predominantly by the Japanese people, which was the case before the cancellation of the Summer Olympics, with 2021, serious increasing questions being asked, will the amended date see The Olympic Games in Tokyo take place.
They are a mass debt burden but the Political “spin” that accompanies the “jargon” in promoting the Benefits to a City and Country is – “it will put us on the map” and we will ALL benefit from staging the Olympic Games in our City.
Hungary – is light years away from being a “serious” applicant and contender, for the staging of The Olympic Games.
The focus of attention in Hungary should be the population of 9.6 million citizens – doing RIGHT for them, to ensure stability in there future and improved quality of life standards.
Shallow in my comments – but written in my thought process, the staging of Olympic Games in Hungary, very near the bottom of the page of my priorities for the “needs” of Hungary, over coming decades.
Born and raised in a City – that held the Olympic Games of 1956 – remember the famous water polo match – Hungary v Russia – amazing History what it reminds us of, and personally, that City and Country, was then confronted with the “raging” struggles of the Vietnam War, Cuban Missile Crisis, the Assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, carrying DEBT from the staging of The Olympic Games, and it was the “swinging sixties” – the global youth driven cultural revolution.
Jury is still “retired” in my “belief” of the benefits to a City or Country, the staging of The Olympic Games – my position that strongly suggests a NO vote from me.
